Reflection on Leadership
My leadership style is best reflected in my personal values, my emotional intelligence, and my positive change orientation. My personal values include a heightened awareness of myself. I’m deeply reflective about my attitudes, behaviors, and interactions. I’m open to feedback and I implement that feedback when appropriate. I’m also very committed to my values and goals. I’m relentless in my pursuit of social justice and equality. I approach all challenges with eagerness to overcome them, and my commitment to excellence is reflected in the high honors I earn on my degrees.
My emotional intelligence is extremely tuned in. My lived experiences have created a necessity for me to perceive and respond to other people’s emotions accordingly. This skill has been enhanced greatly by my education in psychology. Learning about unconscious biases that have deep systemic roots has allowed me to perspective-take on a level I was never before able to. Now I can not only perceive and respond to emotions, but I can better understand them from various points of views.
I have an intense positive change orientation. Sometimes I get restless if I feel circumstances are stagnant and I’m very optimistic of the positive aspects of large changes. I don’t shy away from challenges, and I am confident in my abilities to navigate changes. I’m resilient and willing to persist in the face of failure. All of these aforementioned traits are crucial to effective leadership. My values prove that I will be responsive to the company and the team’s needs and committed to the goals of the organization. My emotional intelligence shows that I will be a valuable part of introducing diversity and harmony throughout the company. My positive change orientation demonstrates my ability to take on challenges and lead the company to new horizons.
Part of GE, LLC’s mission is to serve clients with respect and consideration of their personal demographics (SNHU, n.d.). As someone who is skilled in perspective-taking, I am the best candidate to help achieve this mission. The discrimination that has previously been problematic in GE, LLC’s hiring practices (SNHU, n.d.) will dissolve with myself in a position of leadership. By educating staff on unconscious biases and encouraging/providing training in perspective-taking skills, I can help foster a more inclusive environment. The discrimination and underrepresentation GE, LLC (SNHU, n.d.) is currently experiencing are both major issues that may not even be recognized as active problems within the existing company. Investigating, addressing, and resolving these issues will be a major change within the company that can best be handled by someone with a positive change orientation, like myself.
Psychology has a major impact on both decision-making and leadership, especially as applies to the scenario of GE, LLC. My understanding of how people behave, interact, and process the world around them allows me to develop the skills necessary to lead people into the positive changes necessary for a harmonious, yet diverse, company. Having a background in psychology gives me the education necessary to self-reflect and implement changes that are necessary for a socially just workplace. My psychological background allows me to approach decisions rationally and with consideration to the diverse demographics that should exist within a thriving company, which is exactly the kind of leadership GE, LLC needs.
